Early Planning Team

  • Jane Dentiz Smith

    Jane graduated in 1978 with a B.A. with High Honors from Clark University in Massachusetts. She moved to New York City, where she studied playwrighting at HB Studios, and was employed by the academic publisher Oxford University Press. Responsibilities at Oxford included writing all manner of promotional material (including cover copy and advertisements) for manuscripts that ranged from textbooks to literary analysis. Penguin Books and Bantam Books, she was an editor and proofreader. In New York, Jane was awarded to be a writer-in-residence in New York City school system.

    In the mid ‘80s, Jane commenced a decade-long teaching career at Buxton School, an independent boarding and day school (grades 9-12) with an international student population. At Buxton, her responsibilities were varied but as a principal English instructor, Jane mandate involved cultivation of all manner of writing, reading comprehension, and critical thinking skills. She worked with all grade levels and all levels of proficiency. In addition to classroom teaching, she also provided many students with individual tutoring sessions and served as a college guidance counselor. As a college counselor, Jane utilized her broad knowledge of colleges and universities within New England and throughout the United States, assisting the students with every facet of the application process, including essay writing.

    In the early ’90s, Jane’s professional writing career was elevated with publication of three Young Adult novels and the text for one picture book. HarperCollins, the publisher of her novels, is regaled for publishing the highest quality books for young readers; Workman Publishers, her picture book publisher, is known for lively and engaging text and graphics. Jane is also a writer-in-residence for a theatre company and see professional productions of her plays in international venues and across the United States.

    In the mid ‘90s, she continued freelance tutoring at Buxton and began a 26-year teaching position at Pine Cobble School, an independent day school. At Pine Cobble, she worked with nearly every grade level—as a classroom English teacher and through writing workshops—always sustaining her deep commitment to developing writing, reading, and analytical confidence in all my students.

  • Henry Smith

    Henry was born and raised in a private boarding high school in the United States. He still remembers when he was young, his parents would always take him to the school cafeteria to eat hot food and attend student gatherings. After graduating from high school, he studied at Bard College (in 2009), where he focused on studying composition and journalism in the 20th century and obtained a bachelor\'s degree in music history.

    After graduating from university, he returned to his hometown, Williamstown, Massachusetts, where he worked as a teacher at Buxton School, a small private boarding school with a progressive tradition. During his ten years at Buxton School, Henry taught a wide range of subjects, including English I and III, Architecture, Music History, Algebra II, and Education Theory. At the same time, he also lives on campus as a dormitory teacher, student advisor, college counselor, and football coach to help manage students\' daily lives. In his final year at Buxton School, he was appointed as the Director of Student Affairs.

    Henry is pleased to collaborate one-on-one with students and help them improve their language, writing, and reading abilities in a cross-cultural environment.

  • Youth Mentors

    Within the SNF\' Early Planning Program, there is a project that makes us particularly proud—the Youth Mentor Program. Based on each student\'s personality traits, interests, and academic level, we pair them with a youth mentor who will guide and assist them in completing their planning tasks.

    Youth mentors are undergraduate students from the world\'s top universities, including all Ivy League schools such as Harvard and Yale, as well as Stanford, MIT, Duke, Oxford, and more. They will guide students to develop a critical and curious mindset, focusing on social issues, and help them cultivate a sense of social responsibility as global citizens and an awareness of serving others.

  • Early Education Consulting Service

    Age: Around 3-6 years, preschool children

    Consultants provide school selection advice for parents of preschool children based on their knowledge of public and private schools, including consultation on early childhood education concepts and parent-child relationships. This helps parents understand the current situation of domestic primary schools, choose suitable schools based on their child's characteristics, and gain awareness of early childhood education.

  • International School Application Planning and Guidance

    Age: 6 to 15 years, primary and middle school students

    Based on the student's individual situation and future study abroad intentions, we develop (domestic) international school application plans and provide corresponding coaching for their abilities.

    Phase 1: Communication and determination of study abroad destination, international curriculum system, development of school selection list, and analysis of post-admission choices.

    Phase 2: Implementation of coaching plan based on the study abroad plan, including self-awareness, ESL, interview coaching, essay guidance, critical thinking, reading, and writing. We also provide coaching for necessary parent documents and interviews. We help parents with their challenges (public school or international school) and provide guidance to help them understand international schools. Our goal is to assist and guide students to enter suitable and desired international schools.

  • Early Planning Services for American Middle School, Highschool and Undergraduate Education

    Age: 6 to 17 years, non-application season students in primary, middle, and high school

    Lay the groundwork for the application phase

    Phase 1: Understanding and evaluation (self-awareness coaching, mentor assessment of aptitudes, collecting student information and parent questionnaires, etc.)

    Phase 2: Curriculum and planning (matching youth mentors, developing plans, discussing highlights, recommending and applying for summer schools, recommending ability courses, global resource connections, campus concierge services, etc.)

    Comprehensive planning, identifying gaps, optimizing choices, creating highlights, and steady growth. We analyze students from multiple perspectives, develop personalized plans, connect them with strong resources and courses, identify student characteristics and highlights, and help them enter suitable and desired American middle schools, high schools, and universities, enabling them to achieve genuine growth and transformation.

  • Core Competency Enhancement Course

    Suitable for students needing English proficiency improvement

    Shang NancyFriends offers a vast core competency course system to cultivate and enhance various core competencies in children, including self-awareness, knowledge acquisition and contribution, communication and integration, critical thinking, and academic abilities.   • Parent PBL Workshop

    Parents of children aged 3-17

    The workshop will guide parents in implementing "Project-Based Learning" at home with their children, making full use of family resources to enhance their children's comprehensive abilities.

    Family PBL will enhance children's spirit of active exploration, collaborative hands-on work, independent thinking, problem-solving, and innovation skills, enabling them to become "future-ready" individuals who can adapt quickly to changes and remain competitive in the era of artificial intelligence. Their professional experience and life journeys have provided us with valuable guidance and inspiration. As a community, SNF connects our students with the precious experiences and resources of these friends. The words of wisdom from these exceptional individuals will ignite our children at some point, creating limitless possibilities for them.

    The idea of "Words of Wisdom" has received full recognition and support from these friends. Their passion for education and care for the younger generation have led these outstanding industry leaders to join us as guest speakers. "Words of Wisdom" is built on the community principles of sharing, encouraging, and inspiring, aiming to tell children through our stories, "This world is so much fun!"

    Currently, our guest speakers come from over 25 industries, including investment, technology, philanthropy, media, and the arts. We look forward to more friends joining us to have a chat with the "next generation."

  • Industry Insider Interviews

    Suitable for middle and high school students

    Within the collaborative network of Shang NancyFriends, students with good English proficiency will have the opportunity to visit elite professionals in the workplace (all of whom have studied abroad at renowned universities). This allows them to truly understand the industry through practical experiences and reflect on their own interests and career directions.

    For example, for children interested in business, under the guidance of consultant teachers and after conducting preliminary research, will interview entrepreneurs, professionals in investment banking and funds, to understand their educational backgrounds, industry backgrounds, and career experiences. After the interviews, they will give presentations.

    The Industry Insider Database invites alumni and professional connections from top global institutions and industries, spanning over 30 industries, including both traditional and innovative sectors. These industry leaders have international educational backgrounds and extensive work experiences. Many have graduated from the world's most prestigious Ivy League schools, and some also serve as alumni interviewers for their alma maters in China.
